May Newsletter and Upcoming Events


Curriculum  
Alphabet: *We will practice the capitol and lowercase letters. Your child needs to be able to say the sound for each letter and write each capitol and lowercase letter for the Kindergarten Assessment and ABC club! 
Word Wall: 
*We will practice the sight words “yes” and “no”. Practice! Practice! Your child needs to be able to read 25 Kindergarten sight words to be in the sight word club! We will have a Kindergarten Spelling Test on Sight Word List #2 on Friday May 11. Students will be tested on 7 of the 10 words. Make sure they can spell them! The words are: that, be, for, he, on, was, at, with, have, this.

Math: 
*We will practice calendaring skills, counting to 50, counting by 10s, 5s, 2s, 3s, one to one correspondence, graphing, patterning, phonemic awareness, and phonics.
*We will review numbers 0-10 and practice numbers 11-30.
*We will review money and coin names and amounts.
*We will continue our morning work folders. 
*We will work on parts of a whole and ordinal numbers.
*We will practice fewer and more, most, greatest, and least.
*We will practice how to tell the temperature on a thermometer.
*We will continue addition to 5.
*We will continue subtraction from 5.
*We will practice time to the hour.
*We will work on nonstandard measurement.
Literacy
*We will continue the Harcourt and Fontas and Pinnel literacy programs.
*We will continue our Intensive Phonics program. Please watch for the homework sheets associated with this program.
*We will discuss Beginning, Middle, and Ending of stories. 
*We will predict and summarize.
*We will work on sequencing events in a story.
*We will practice asking questions.
*We will discuss book orientation and fiction and nonfiction.
*We will practice sight words and review rhyme using our Nursery Rhyme books.
*We will practice writing sounds we hear in words (beginning, middle, and end). 
*We will continue decodable books from Harcourt used in our power half hour groups when ready.
*Power Half Hour has ended for the year! We will continue to review concepts and practice for the Kindergarten Assessment 
*We will continue to award students who get into the ABC, Sight Word, and Number Clubs! Keep working to earn these awards! 
*We will NOT have centers for the remaining weeks of school! However, I will be happy to have parents volunteer in the classroom during the same times assisting students in reviewing for our upcoming Kindergarten and Dibels Assessment as well as helping to finish student portfolios.  All parent volunteers will need to begin signing in each time they are in the classroom to volunteer. There will be a volunteer sign in sheet next to the door of our classroom. I will show you where it is when you come to volunteer next. 
Books: Rain, The Wind Blew, Weather, What’s The Weather, A Tree for All Seasons, Tops and Bottoms, Growing Vegetable Soup, Click Clack Moo, The Night Before Summer Vacation, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly, One Hundred Hungry Ants, All About Frogs, Fly Monarch Fly
Writing: 
*We will continue writer’s workshop and be writing in our Kindergarten Journals and Scribble Journals.
*We will practice proper pencil grip and handwriting.
*We will practice handwriting upper and lowercase letters and numbers to 30.
Announcements: 
*READING FOLDERS are due May 7. ALL READING BOOKS AND FOLDERS NEED TO BE RETURNED! I WILL BE CALLING PARENTS TO TRACK DOWN LOST BOOKS! LOST BOOKS WILL NEED TO BE PAID FOR! THIS CONCLUDES OUR READING FOLDERS FOR THE YEAR!
*Please work on the next bonus sight word list with your child! We are practicing these words and concepts in class! Return ALL skill sheets. I have attached the next sight word list. We do NOT have any more skill sheets!
*Please check out our class BLOG if you need to access the newsletter. To access the blog, go to the school web page and click on Teacher Websites. Click on my name below my picture and you will see our blog! 
*Just a reminder: Library is Friday so remember to return books, PE is Thursday so wear appropriate shoes, computer lab is Friday, and Book in a Bag is once a week on Tuesday. Remember to return book in a bags! I have been putting several kids into leveled books! These are books the kids can now read TO YOU!
*Our faculty has been asked to remind all parents that there is NO supervision for students at school before 8:30, so please make sure you DO NOT drop students off before this time. Students who arrive before 8:30 will need to be outside.
*Our class will be collecting box tops for education. If you have any of these, please send them in a baggie in your child’s homework folder! Thank you!
*Remember that if your child is going to be missing a day of school to call the office and excuse them. In addition, if you are going to be picking up your child early, please make sure you check them out in the office before picking them up from class.
*Lunch Note: Students will not be able to charge their accounts for any amount, for any reason after May 18th. Please remember the system does not allow anyone to charge their account any amount over $5.00 at anytime. Please plan accordingly to help us run smoothly. Please keep track of your child's balance or sign up on Nutrikids.com to check their balance, see when they are eating and receive email alerts when their balance has reached an amount you have set to be notified. Call the office to get your child’s lunch account number if you do not know it. Follow the prompts to make a payment online and set up the account. It is free to set up the account and you do not have to pay online to use this service. You just need to click make a payment to get to the set up screen but you will not have to make a payment. Thank you for your cooperation.

Early Out Wed. Times: AM class 8:55-10:55. Please be on time to avoid tardies and classroom distraction.

REMINDER: Please continue to remind your student to turn in their EAGLE FOLDER EVERY DAY! It would also be a good idea to remind your child on Monday to bring their blue READING FOLDER into the classroom to switch books! New books are always exciting!
HOMEWORK: We will have homework on Monday and Wednesday.  Please sign your name under your child’s name on the homework sheets. That way I know you have worked on it with your child. Please make sure you DO NOT have your child do homework with a pen, marker, or crayon. Pencil is best when handwriting.

Our Kindergarten PJ day and read a thon is Wednesday May 9! Students may wear their pj’s to school and bring a small treat and drink to have during the read a thon. I will provide reading books for this activity. 


Upcoming Kindergarten Events
May 7: Reading Folders Due: On Monday May 7, I would like ALL blue reading folders and books returned to the classroom. We will end our reading folders at this time. Lost books will be $5 per pair or $2.50 per book. I will be making phone calls to any student who has not returned their books or folder. In addition it is now VERY important to return ALL book in a bag and Library books to school. Any lost or damaged books will need to be paid for before the end of the year. 

May 9: Pajama Day and Read A Thon: On Wednesday May 9 we will be having a Kindergarten PJ day! Your child may wear pajamas to school on this day and bring a small treat and drink for themselves to have during the read a thon. I will provide reading books for the children to use during our read a thon.

May 15: Clifford The Big Red Dog Birthday: On Tuesday May 15, we will be celebrating the birthday of one of our favorite book characters, Clifford the Big Red Dog! Please bring a RED treat to share with the class on that day and your child will need to wear something RED to school as well! Our class t-shirts will be PEFECT for that day!

May 16: East Elementary 2012 Fundraiser: Walk A Thon: Please see the blue sheet explaining this event and how to get pledges. Please make sure your child dresses that day for walking and the outdoors. Sunscreen is a must!


May 18: Kindergarten Field Day. I will need a few volunteers for this event. If you are interested in helping with field day, please call, e-mail, or come and ask me in the classroom. Field day will consist of several outside centers for the kids. Please have your child wear plenty of sunscreen and clothes appropriate for outside play. In addition, I would like each child to bring a bag or bucket of 20 or more FILLED water balloons. We might get a little wet!

May 21: 5 Buck Pizza Field Trip: On Monday May 21 we will be traveling to 5 Buck Pizza to watch how pizza is made! We will get to make our very own personal pizza to eat! I will also need a volunteer or two for this field trip as well, so let me know if you are interested. All students need to bring $1 on or before this date to purchase their pizza. Please sign the permission slip ASAP for this field trip!

May 24: Reward Movie: Our Kindergarten end of the year movie will be May 24. You child will need to have made significant growth on their final Dibels and K Assessment to earn their ticket to this movie! Details for earning tickets will be coming soon! 

May 25: Last Day and Final Assembly: The last day of school is May 25! We will have a final awards assembly and school slide show at 9:30 on this day! Parents are welcome to attend!
