January 22-25



Core Curriculum

Word Wall:
*We practice the sight word “that”.

Alphabet:
 We will write the upper and lowercase letters and practice their sounds. Students need to be able to recognize, and write each upper and lowercase letter as well as know each letter sound for our winter Kindergarten Assessment!

Math:
*We will practice calendaring skills, counting to 20 by ones and tens to 100, counting by 5s, one to one correspondence, graphing, shapes, and patterning.
*We will continue our morning calendar books.
*We will practice counting and writing numbers to 20. This is also a Kindergarten Test item.
*We will practice simple addition. (Test item)
*We will work in our math journals during centers.
*We will continue estimation! I will be sending home ESTIMATION JARS for students to work on and bring to school! Please watch for this jar coming home soon!

Literacy
*We will continue Kindergarten Power ½ hour.  Students will be working in groups developing literacy and reading skills! This is a VERY important part of our Kindergarten program.
*We will continue the Harcourt and Fontas and Pinnel literacy programs.
*We will continue the new Intensive Phonics Program. Please watch for homework sheets that coordinate with this program!
*We will discuss beginning, middle, and ending of stories.
*We will predict and summarize.
*We will work on sequencing events in a story.
*We will practice asking questions.
*We will work on syllables.
*We will work on segmenting sounds in words. (Beginning, middle, end)
*We will review parts of a sentence.
*We will discuss book orientation and fiction and nonfiction.
*We will work in sight word poem books.

Writing:
*We will continue Writer’s Workshop and continue drawing and writing in our Kindergarten Journals and Scribble Journals will full sentences. (Capitol, spacing, and punctuation)
*We will practice handwriting skills and proper pencil grip.
Class Themes: Seasons (winter), Fewer and More, Addition to 5, Effects of Winter on Animals and People,
 
 
Event Picking
*Reading Folders are Due TUESDAY Jan. 22. Please work on filling out your reading record, so your child can receive two new books. Prizes will be given weekly and monthly for students who complete their reading!
*The lock down drill has been changed to Feb. 7.
*There will be NO SCHOOL on Mon. Jan. 21 for MLK holiday!
*We are planning Kindergarten Parent Training for Thurs, Jan. 24! Please sign and return the purple form ASAP, so I know how many people will be attending! This is a GREAT opportunity for you to learn about some excellent techniques to do at home with your child! You will also receive a free book!
*Our next Flag Ceremony will be Friday Jan. 25 at 2 pm.
*Our next Kindergarten Assessment and Dibels assessment is this month! Please use the homework packet to review concepts with your child! Dibels The Kindergarten Assessment will be going on throughout the rest of the month! It is quite a large test that takes several days to complete! I will send home the test results as well as progress reports for second term when we have completed all the test items and scores are entered!
*Curriculum Night/Multicultural Fair is scheduled for Feb. 7. More information will be coming!
*Please check the class blog! Go to the school web page and click on faculty. Click on my name below my picture and you will see our blog!
*Please work on skill sheet #5 with your child, sign the paper, and return the sheet at the end of the month.  
*Please practice Sight Word List #5 with your child. When he/she is ready to pass off the list, return it with the signed slip! Students need to be able to read each word fluently to pass off the list.  Students will be required to read 10 sight words on the next Kindergarten Assessment. I have attached Sight Word List #5 for January.
We will have CENTERS on Jan. 22 and 23! Volunteers, I will see you there! I rely HEAVILY on your support to make my centers a success! Please make sure you sign in! Thanks!
*We will visit the library on Jan. 28. Please return you library book, so your child can receive a new one! ALL library books and Book in a Bag need to be returned before the holiday break!
*P.E. and Music day is every Thursday! Wear appropriate shoes for PE.

Early Out Wed. Times: AM class 8:55-10:55. Please be on time to avoid tardies and classroom distraction.
*Remember that if your child is going to be missing a day of school to call the office and excuse them. In addition, if you are going to be picking up your child early, please make sure you check them out in the office before picking them up from class.

*Birthdays: Jazmine's birthday is Jan. 21! We have celebrated it on Jan. 18!
Jaxon’s half birthday is 1/23! Actual birthday is 7/21
(You may bring a class treat on the day we celebrate your birthday. Please bring treats for 27 students.) Optional

Homework: We will have homework this week on Tuesday and Thursday! Please remember to have your child do the homework neatly in pencil and sign your name under theirs, so I know you have looked at it! Homework needs to be done NEATLY WITH BEST HANDWRITING!
