The Kindergarten Core

Mrs. George’s Class News
October 23-26

Core Curriculum

Word Wall: 
*We practice the sight word “to”.

Alphabet:
We will practice letters Nn and Oo. We will write the upper and lowercase letters and practice their sounds.

Math: 
*We will practice calendaring skills, counting to 10 by ones and tens to 100, one to one correspondence, graphing, shapes, patterning, and colors.
*We will continue our morning calendar books.
*We will practice counting and writing numbers to 10. We will finish our number books. We will practice counting, writing and manipulating these numbers.
*We will work on nonstandard measurement and math journals in centers. 

Literacy
*We will continue Kindergarten Power ½ hour.  Students will be working in groups developing literacy and reading skills! This is a VERY important part of our Kindergarten program. 
*We will continue the Harcourt and Fontas and Pinnel literacy programs.
*We will discuss beginning, middle, and ending of stories. 
*We will predict and summarize.
*We will work on sequencing events in a story.
*We will practice asking questions. 
*We will work on syllables.
*We will work on beginning sounds. 
*We will review parts of a sentence.
*We will discuss book orientation and fiction and nonfiction.

Books: A Tree For All Seasons, Big Red Apple, Picking Apples and Pumpkins, Dappled Apples, I Am An Apple, Johnny Appleseed, Apple Countdown, The Witch with the Twitch, The Halloween Play, Leaves, It’s Pumpkin Time, Let It Fall, Grow A Pumpkin Pie, Autumn’s First Leaf, The Littlest Pumpkin, Wee Witches Halloween, The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, Skelton Meets the Mummy, Five Little Bats, Pumpkin Pumpkin, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves and a Bat!

Writing: 
*We will continue Writer’s Workshop and continue drawing and writing in our Kindergarten Journals and Scribble Journals.
*We will practice handwriting skills and proper pencil grip. 
*We will be writing and learning about our 5 Senses!


Event Picking

*Reading Folders are Due Tuesday October 23. Please work on filling out your reading record, so your child can receive two new books. Prizes will be given weekly and monthly for students who complete their reading!
*Please check the class blog! Go to the school web page and click on faculty. Click on my name below my picture and you will see our blog!
*October Field Trip
Friday Oct. 26 we will go to the SUU art museum. Please sign and return the attached permission form!
*Please work on skill sheet #2 with your child, sign the paper, and return the sheet at the end of the month. 
*Please practice Sight Word List #2 with your child. When he/she is ready to pass off the list, return it with the signed slip! Students need to be able to read each word fluently to pass off the list.  
*First term ended Oct. 17! I will be sending home progress reports soon! 
*We will have CENTERS on Tues. this week! We will NOT have centers on Wednesday due to the Red Ribbon Assembly. No volunteers will be needed on that day; however, you are welcome to come on Tues.!
*We will have a Red Ribbon Week Assembly on Oct. 24 at 10:00.
*We will be making a special Halloween treat on Oct. 31! I will be sending home a treat sheet to furnish items for this special day soon! 
*Fall Recess is Oct. 18, 19, and 22. NO School on these days!
*The Halloween Carnival is Oct. 27 from 11-3. Come dressed in your costume for LOTS of games, food, and fun!
*We will visit the library on Oct. 29. Please return you library book, so your child can receive a new one!
*P.E. and Music day is every Thursday! Wear appropriate shoes for PE.

Early Out Wed. Times: AM class 8:55-10:55. Please be on time to avoid tardies and classroom distraction.
*Remember that if your child is going to be missing a day of school to call the office and excuse them. In addition, if you are going to be picking up your child early, please make sure you check them out in the office before picking them up from class.

Homework: We will have homework on Tuesday and Thursday this week! Please remember to have your child do the homework neatly in pencil and sign your name under theirs, so I know you have looked at it! Homework needs to be done NEATLY WITH BEST HANDWRITING!
